Alwar is the first major city encountered when going from Delhi to Rajasthan, and it is unusually placed 150 km south of Delhi and 150 kilometres north of Jaipur. Alwar is a tourist hotspot, boasting forts like the Bhangarh Fort, lakes, natural reserves like the Sariska Tiger Reserve, and heritage havelis. Aside from being a renowned tourist destination, Alwar takes pride in being featured in a number of Bollywood films. It is also famous for the annual Mega Alwar Trade Fair held at the Dussehra Ground, as well as handcrafted Papier-mâché (literally 'chewed paper'). Alwar is also known for Alwar ka Mawa, a sweet dish.
Alwar, surrounded by the Aravali hills, is a beautiful city with a rich cultural and historical legacy. Alwar is one of Rajasthan's most interesting cities, with its stately fort, stunning City Palace, and colourful markets. Alwar is one of Rajasthan's earliest kingdoms and one of the first Rajput states to join with the British empire. The city becomes an excellent weekend destination from New Delhi.
Alwar History
- In 1106 Vikrami Samvat (1049 CE), the King of Amer established the city of Alpur in his own name, which later became Alwar.
- Various Rajput sub-clans dominated this area from time to time, including Khanzada Rajputs, Nikumbh Rajputs, Badgujar Rajputs, and lastly Naruka Rajputs.
- Pratap Singh, a Rajput, agreed to take possession of the Alwar fort from the Jat Raja of Bharatpur, laying the groundwork for the present Alwar, which became a princely state during colonial rule.
- On March 18, 1948, the state amalgamated with three surrounding princely states: Bharatpur, Dholpur, and Karauli.
- On May 15, Alwar was merged with adjacent princely states and the area of Ajmer to form modern-day Rajasthan. It was also recognised as part of the National Capital Region, which sparked tremendous growth.
