ST. JOHN'S CHURCH: The quaint church of St. John in the Wilderness is located between Forsythganj and Mcleodganj, 8 kilometers from Dharamsala. A memorial has been built over the remains of Lord Elgin, the British Viceroy who passed away in Dharamsala in 1863, in the shade of deodar branches. These grassy slopes are home to a well-kept historic cemetery.
DAL LAKE: This charming and tranquil picnic area is 11 miles from Dharamsala and is encircled by deodar trees.
BHAGSUNATH: This historic temple is 11 miles from Dharamsala and is near fresh springs. It is a well-liked location for picnics, and the well-known slate quarries are nearby.
OTHER ATTRACTIONS: The temple of Jwalamukhi, Chamunda Devi and Brijeshwari Devi are other pilgrim centers close to Dharamsala. The fort of Kangra and Ma11ngarh are other attractions.
Best time to visit Mcleodganj
The winter months of October through February and the summer months of March through June are the ideal times to visit Mcleod Ganj. Summers in the area are comfortable, with highs of about 25°C, and winters are chilly and bitterly cold, with lows of -1°C to 9°C. Since the area experiences significant annual precipitation, monsoons are not particularly advised. Due to the intense rains in July and August, it is advisable to avoid them.
How to Reach Mcleodganj
The closest wide gauge railway station is 90 km away from Mcleodganj, which is situated at the boundary between Punjab and Himachal. It takes about 6-7 hours to get to Mcloedganj from Chandigarh and overnight from New Delhi. Travellers can readily access buses and taxis to get to Mcleodganj from that location. The least expensive and reasonably pleasant method to go to Mcleodganj is by bus, and Himachal State Buses runs routes to the area from several locations throughout the state, as well as from Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi.
