Umananda Temple is a well-known Hindu temple situated on Peacock Island in the center of the powerful Brahmaputra River in Guwahati, Assam, three kilometers from Guwahati Railway Station. It is one of the most visited sites in Guwahati and one of the most well-known temples in Assam.
The temple is located atop a hill known as Bhasmakala or Bhasmakuta. King Gadadhar Singha first constructed the island in 1694 A.D. However, an earthquake in 1897 damaged it, and a wealthy local trader eventually rebuilt it. The talented Assamese artisans created the exquisite Umananda temple. The shrines have idols of ten other Hindu deities in addition to Lord Shiva.
Maha Shivaratri is the major festival celebrated in this temple with great pomp which attracts large number of devotees. According to a popular belief, it is said that worshipping here on an Amavasya day, especially falling on Monday, brings highest bliss to the worshippers.
