Shedup Choepelling Temple, sometimes referred to as Tibetan Buddhist Temple, is a remarkable specimen of Tibetan architecture. The Dalai Lama dedicated it, making it the first Tibetan shrine constructed in India. The Dalai Lama is thought to have escaped Chinese authorities in 1959 and taken sanctuary in Mussoorie’s Happy Valley. The Tibetan community in Mussoorie later converted the place where he resided into a Buddhist temple.
In addition to the many sculptures and idols of Lord Buddha, the temple’s main hall is adorned with two enormous, lifelike statues of the Dalai Lama and Buddha as a sign of reverence for both deities. The location is made more appealing by the colourfully painted walls, small clay diyas, and prayer flags. To further enhance your experience, Shedup Choepelling Temple has an extensive library of Buddhist and Tibetan literature books. The promenade also provides breathtaking views of the snow-capped mountains, blooming flowers, the graceful valley, and a stunning scenery in general.
Shedup Choepelling Temple is conveniently accessible by public transportation or own driving, and it is only 2 km from Library Chawk. A taxicab can be rented from your lodging.
