The Kaleshwar Mahadev temple, a primary and favorite destination for Lord Shiva devotees in Lansdowne, was renowned as a sage’s haven of meditation. The samadhis of numerous sages are still visible to visitors close to the temple.
The Shivaling in the Kaleshwar Mahadev Temple is called Swayambhu (Self-formed). According to the mythology, the cowherders in the area discovered their cows gone on the day of Mahashivratri. Later, they discovered the cows milking in the cave after finding a Shivlinga on their own.
There is also popular belief that before the Shivling, some 5000 years ago, Sage Kalun meditated here. Kaludanda, after the Sage Kalun, was Lansdowne’s previous name. The temple’s current edifice was established in 1901, and the Garhwal Regiment currently maintains the Dharamshala that was constructed close by.Â
