It is imperative that you visit Honnamana Kere (Honnama Lake), the largest lake in the Coorg region (Kannada: ಹೊನ್ನಮ್ಮನ ಕೆರೆ). It is among the several tourist attractions of Somwarpet, one of the Coorg taluks. The settlement of Sulimalthe is not far from Daddamalthe, where Honnamana Kere Lake is situated. Six kilometres separate Sulimalthe hamlet and Somwarpet town.
Visitors can enjoy stunning scenery and fantastic photo opportunities at the Honnamana Kere. The surroundings are serene and tranquil. Magnificent mountains, cliffs, and vast stretches of coffee farms encircle it, providing a stunning natural scene. The Lake is also surrounded by two hills called Gavi Betta and Mori Betta.
The lake has religious significance in addition to its evident scenic appeal. It bears Goddess Honnamma’s name. A temple is also located next to the lake. The Goddess Honnamma, who is revered in the temple, is supposed to have given her life in order to ensure the welfare of the populace. The lake is a popular destination for religious travellers. Many newlywed couples visit the lake to make their offerings during the Gowri Pooja celebration.
The Lake provides a variety of outdoor activities, including boating and fishing, in addition to sightseeing.
The structure of Honnamana Kere served as the inspiration for the tale Kerege Hara. Legend has it that Goddess Honnamana, a divinity, gave her life in order to ensure the well-being of the populace. In her commemoration, a temple was built, and more recently, renovations have been made to give better amenities.
Honnamana Kere Lake does not charge admission. Every day of the week, it is open from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm.
Winter is the ideal season to visit the lake because of the lovely weather.
Madikeri Bus Stand, which is roughly 45 km distant, is the closest bus stop to Honnamana Kere Lake. To go to the lake from there, you can take a taxi.
