Bade Hanuman Mandir, Prayagraj | History, Timing & How to reach

The famous Bade Hanuman Temple is situated in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, 1 km from Triveni Sangam, and 7 km from Allahabad Railway Station. It is one of the most visited religious sites in Allahabad and is located close to the Allahabad Fort.

Bade Hanuman Temple, sometimes called Lette Hanuman Mandir, is devoted to the monkey deity Hanuman. This temple is a six- to seven-foot-deep underground pit that has a massive laying idol of Hanumanji. The deity is reclining in this temple, which is the only one of its kind in the world dedicated to Lord Hanuman. After scorching Lanka, Hanuman is said to have rested here in folklore. The fact that one side of the statue of Lord Hanuman is partially submerged in Ganges River water is another fascinating fact about this temple. It is thought that the river’s water rises to touch the deity’s feet during the monsoon season when the water level rises. During this time, a lot of devotees come to visit this sacred sight.

History & Legends of Bade Hanuman Mandir, Prayagraj

According to folklore, the Kannauj king had no offspring. When he went to the Guru Ashram to have children, the Guru gave Rajan instructions to have the statue of Hanuman placed in his realm. And to do that, he traveled to the highlands of Vidhyanchal and used a boat to transport this monument to his realm. The Prayag region arrived en route. At Prayag, the king made the decision to leave the boat on the shore for the night. When the boat abruptly broke in the middle of the night and Hanuman Ji’s Deity was immersed, the king became very distraught and left for his realm. After many years, the water level of the Ganges decreased, then a Ram devotee Baba Balagiri Ji Maharaj found out the deity while digging the dhuni. Baba was very pleased to see the whole Deity and started worshiping Hanuman Ji here.

The deity of Lord Hanuman, facing south, is kept in a shrine within the temple in a reclining position. The idol, which is 20 feet long and 8 feet wide, is thought to be between 600 and 700 years old. In addition, the ‘Janaki shrine’ and a peepal tree are located next to the shrine. The Baghambari Gaddi is in charge of running the temple. The city’s most frequented pilgrimage site, the shrine is particularly busy on Tuesdays and Saturdays.
