Bhadkeshwar Mahadev Temple is an old Hindu temple in Dwarka, Gujarat, two kilometers from Dwarkadhish Temple and four kilometers from Dwarka Railway Station. Lord Shiva, also known as Chandra-Mouliswar, is worshipped in the Bhadkeshwar Temple, which was constructed on a small mound on the Arabian Sea. This temple houses a Shivalinga in the sanctuary that Jagatguru Sankaracharya himself discovered near the meeting point of the Gomati and Arabian Seas. This sacred temple is close to Rukmini Temple and Geeta Mandir. It is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Dwarka and one of the most captivating pilgrimage sites in Gujarat.

History & Mythology of Bhadkeshwar Mahadev Mandir

One of the oldest temples in the area is the Bhadkeshwar Mahadev Temple, which is thought to be around 5000 years old. It becomes partially submerged at high tide, adding to its distinct and ethereal charm. The temple is surrounded by a unique tale that describes the sea god performing the Shivalinga’s abhisheka. Every year, on a day in June or July, the Arabian Sea slowly rises and penetrates the temple. Until the Shivalinga’s abhisheka is finished, the entire building is briefly submerged in water. The water returns to its regular level after the sea’s prayers.

This place’s spiritual essence is embodied in the building, which is strikingly modest yet attractive. A naturally formed Shiva ling that rises from the Arabian Sea and is only visible at low tide can be seen at the Bhadkeshwar Mahadev Temple. At high tide, the temple, which is situated on a limestone cliff, is submerged in water, adding to its unique ethereal allure. In addition, there are 1200 Salgramshilas, 1300 Shiva Lingas, and metal depictions of 75 Sankaracharyas on the temple grounds. It’s also a great place to see the sunset over the Arabian Sea.

Festivals of Bhadkeshwar Mahadev Mandir

Devbhoomi Dwarka’s Bhadkeshwar Mahadev Mandir is well-known for its yearly Maha Shivratri celebration, which happens in February or March. Thousands of people gather to honor Lord Shiva on the eve of Maha Shivratri during a fair conducted on the temple grounds. Furthermore, the whole month of Shravan, which runs from July to August, is said to be very fortunate for Lord Shiva, and Mondays (Shravan Somvar) attract sizable crowds for rituals and prayers. Additionally, this place celebrates Navratri and Kartik Purnima with great fervor and grandeur.

It is best to schedule your visit during Maha Shivratri or the month of Shravan, when the temple is decorated with intricate rituals and festivities that enhance its hallowed atmosphere, in order to experience it in its most spiritually rewarding condition. The temple has steps going to it, but at high tide, water encircles it.
