The 16th-century Vithala Temple, the most striking building in Hampi, is a magnificent example of ornate design. On the grounds of this temple stands the well-known stone chariot, which has come to represent Hampi architecture.
The temple complex occupies a vast space. The main entrance opens into a spacious courtyard with the well-known stone chariot in the middle, and also features an amazing arch with carvings. The main temple, which features exquisite sculptures, is situated directly behind the chariot. The courtyard also has a number of smaller temples, all of which are well worth a visit. Numerous gods in various forms are shown in the sculptures on the walls and pillars of these temples.
