Pookode Lake in Wayanad is a freshwater lake that resembles an Indian map and is located close to Kalpetta. This stunning lake, which is encircled by the Western Ghats and nestled between evergreen trees, enthralls every visitor to Wayanad.

Pookode Lake, also known as Pookot Lake, is a naturally occurring freshwater lake situated 770 meters above sea level in the Wayanad district. At five hectares, it is the smallest freshwater lake in Kerala and the highest in elevation. The Panamaram River, which runs through the valley to join the Kabini River, also originates at Pookode Lake.

Pookode Lake is a popular destination for family vacations, boating, and taking in the tranquil atmosphere. Enjoy the scenery while seeing the wildlife and birds that arrive at the lake from the nearby woods. Water lilies and lotuses can also be seen in the lake.

The location includes a children’s park, a freshwater aquarium, and a handicraft store.

Things to do in Pookode Lake Wayanad

1. Strolling about the lake: Pookode Lake features a jogging path that round its bank, which is surrounded by tall trees and dense shrubs. You can sit on a bench and take pictures of the lake with flowers floating in the water, or you can take a leisurely walk. Around the lake, you will also see a lot of birds, butterflies, and animals.

2. Boating in the lake: Pookot Lake’s primary draw is boating. The rowboats and pedal boats provide you a tour of the lake’s tranquil surroundings. You may float with the fish in the sea, take in the captivating vistas of the surrounding hills, and get up close and personal with the freshwater flowers in the lake. Fishes of the Pethia pookodensis species are found solely in Pookode Lake.

3. Visiting the aquarium: Another highlight on the property is the freshwater aquarium. There is a tiny exhibit of a variety of freshwater fish at the Pookode Lake aquarium.

4. Unwinding in the fish bath Pookode Lake also offers a fish spa for refreshing relaxation. For your session, put your feet in the water, unwind, and allow the small fish to eat away at your dead skin cells.

Pookode Lake Timings and Entry Fee

Pookode Lake opens at 9:00 AM and closes at 5:00 PM. Entry closes at 4:30 PM, however boating hours are same from 9 AM to 5 PM. Therefore, if you wish to enjoy boating at Pookode Lake, arrive early. It is open all year long.

Adult admission to Pookode Lake costs ₹20, while children aged 5 to 12 enter for ₹10 each.

In addition, a photo camera costs ₹20, while a video camera costs ₹150. For a 20-minute trip, the cost of boating in Pookode Lake is ₹100 for pedal boats with two seats and ₹200 for pedal boats with four seats. Rowboats can be rented for ₹350 for 30 minutes.

A 10-minute session at Pookot Lake’s fish bath costs ₹50.

Best Time to visit Pookode Lake

Winter is the best time of year to arrange a trip to Pookode Lake, Kerala. It lasts till February and starts in October or November. Because of the recent rainfall, the weather is nice, the temperature is cool, and the views are revitalizing.

Activities at Pookode Lake get less fun as the weather increases, but you may still visit the lake after the winter, until April or May.

In order to witness the sunset, it is also advised to visit Pookode Lake Wayanad in the evening.
