Diskit Monastery, Nubra-valley – Facts, History and Travel Guide
The 106-foot Maitreya Buddha statue, which is situated just beneath the monastery, is the main reason why Diskit Monastery is a popular tourist destination in the Nubra Valley.
Situated at the edge of the desert, 15 kilometers northwest of the Khalsar-Panakil highway, and at an elevation of 10,308 feet, is the Nubra Valley’s Diskit Monastery. It is situated on a hill at the side of a road that connects Those and Partharpur.
Things to see in the Diskit Monastery
With elaborate wall murals and frescoes, the Diskit Monastery’s interiors are almost as stunning as its exteriors. Huge drums and exquisite representations of the Buddhist guardian deities may be found in the Dukhang prayer hall.
Along with a number of shrines, the monastery’s storeroom houses a large collection of Tibetan and Mongolian sacred writings.
The Lachung Temple, which is well-known for its enormous idol of Tsong Khapa, the founder of the Gelugpa branch of Buddhism, is located directly above the monastery. It is thought to be among the Nubra Valley’s ancient temples.
Beautiful views of the Diskit Village and the surroundings may also be seen from the Diskit Monastery.
