One of the most well-known ashrams in Haridwar is Sapt Rishi Ashram, which was founded in 1943 by Guru Goswami Dutt. This ashram is well-known for its peaceful environment that is perfect for meditation and for having hosted seven great sages: Kashyapa, Vashishta, Atri, Vishwamitra, Jamadagi, Bharadwaja, and Gautam. At this location, the Ganga is also said to have divided into seven currents. This is a must-visit location for yoga enthusiasts and those looking for happiness and spiritual comfort.
According to legendary accounts, the Ganga River was divided into seven streams to prevent the sound of rushing water from disturbing the sages. The ashram is also known as Sapt Sarovar or Sapt Rishi Kund because of this. This ashram is highly respected by rishis, saints, and sages worldwide because of its religious significance. The well-kept structure of the ashram includes a Sanskrit school for underprivileged kids as well as a residential hostel.
Mythology Behind Saptrishi Ashram
Hindu legend states that the seven great sages Vashishtha, Kashyapa, Atri, Vishwamitra, Gautama, Bharadwaja, and Jamadagni gathered here to meditate, hence the name Saptarshi (Seven Sages) Ashram.
Hindus think that the sages were disturbed by the roaring Ganges floods as they were sitting here to meditate. They imprisoned the Ganges River so they might meditate in solitude. To prevent any disruption to the meditating sages, the Ganga later divided herself into seven tiny streams. Thus, Sapt Sarovar, which translates to “seven streams,” became the new name for the Sapt Rishi Ashram.
Another story that appears in the scriptures is that the Pandavas passed through this place on their way to heaven and their idols along with their wives on the banks of the river still stand near the ashram.
