The Gaumukh Temple, devoted to Lord Shiva, is one of the most popular pilgrimage destinations in Mount Abu. The main draw of this temple is the 700-step sacred climb, which is well-known for its year-round religious pilgrimages and meditations in addition to providing a broad perspective over the surrounding valley. Gaumukh (Cow’s Head), within the dense jungle, greets you with a statue of Nandi and idols of Lord Krishna, Lord Rama, and Rishi Vashistha. In Hindu mythology, Nandi, the celestial bull of Lord Shiva, is honored by the enigmatic water stream that emerges from the marble bull’s mouth. Hence, the Gaumukh Temple is popular among both Lord Shiva’s devotees and tourists who want to explore the sacred site of mystery.

In honor of Saint Vashishth, who carried out a yagna that gave rise to the four main Rajput clans, the Gaumukh Temple was constructed. According to legend, the purpose of the Yagna was to ask the gods and goddesses for their blessings so that the world would be protected. One of the temple’s primary attractions, the Agni Kund, is where Yagna was performed. According to the Ramayana legend, Ram and Lakshman arrived here during Ram Vanvas in order to receive Gyan and blessings from Rishi Vashistha, who was staying here.
