Company Bagh in Amritsar is home to the Maharaja Ranjit Singh Museum. The museum has the name of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, the first king of the Sikh Empire, who used it as his summer residence. In addition to the history, art, and architecture of the Sikh community from the 18th to the 19th centuries, the museum now offers insight into the Maharaja’s life. The museum is roughly 4 kilometers from The Golden Temple and 1.5 km from Amritsar Junction.
The museum, which was transformed into a museum in 1977, houses numerous artifacts and the Maharaja’s personal belongings, including his armor and weapons. Fantastic artworks, a variety of manuscripts, and coins from bygone eras are also on show. This shows the rich heritage of the Sikh province as well as the Maharaja’s secular mindset. The majority of the paintings show scenes from the camp and court of the Sikh ruler. The one that shows the city of Lahore is the most well-known among observers out of all of them. The renowned Rambagh Gardens, which are known for its statue of the mythical monarch and his horse, encircle the palace.
History of Ranjit Singh
One of the most significant Sikh kings to rule the northwest Indian subcontinent in the nineteenth century was Maharaja Ranjit Singh. Known as the ‘Lion of Punjab,’ Maharaja Ranjit Singh was a key character in Indian history who used his sword to establish a vast kingdom.
He was the first Sikh ruler in Punjab to fly the banner of freedom since the East India Company had conquered all of India except Punjab. He took control of Amritsar in 1802, making it the spiritual capital.
During his tenure, the kingdom of Punjab experienced a number of modernizations, reforms, and the integration of Europeans, Muslims, and Hindus. The Harminder Sahib and several other significant gurudwaras in the city were also restored by the king.
