Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, Guwahati – Timings, Entry Fee, Safari Cost

Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary is a tiny wildlife reserve at Pabitara in the Morigaon district of Assam, 40 kilometers away from Guwahati. One of the most well-known wildlife sanctuaries in Assam and a must-see location in Guwahati, it is located in the floodplains of the powerful Brahmaputra River.

Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary is a tiny wildlife lover’s paradise, home to the highest density of rhinoceroses in the world. It is one of the two Assamese treasure troves of the renowned and critically endangered one-horned rhino, together with Kaziranga. Pobitora was once a cow grazing reserve in the former Nagaon district. It gained notoriety in 1961–1962 after a One Horned Rhino was spotted there. It was designated as a reserve forest in 1971 and became a wildlife sanctuary in 1987, covering an area of 38.83 square kilometers.

The forest, grassland, and water bodies or beels are the three separate categories into which the sanctuary is separated. Wet meadows make about 72% of the overall area, with only about 13% covered by trees. Beels or bodies of water cover the remaining space. With 93 rhinos, Pobitora is overpopulated and has more rhinos than it can support. Other animals seen here include leopards, wild boar, barking deer, wild buffalo, and rhinoceroses. More than 2000 migratory birds and a variety of reptiles can be found at Assam’s Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary.

The main events that Pobitora’s administration arranges are jeep safaris and elephant rides. They set up three people to sit in each elephant, and they take them on an hour-long journey deep within the forest, providing a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
The Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary Forest Range Office, located in Raja Mayang, is the sanctuary’s entry. To enter the sanctuary area, one must then cross the hanging bridge. In Pobitora, lodging options are scarce. Staying in the Forest Department Guest House is the greatest choice.

Although Pobitora is accessible all year round, November through March are the ideal months to visit.
