Unquestionably, one of the greatest terrace gardens in the world is Mysore’s Brindavan Gardens. Brindavan Garden, a must-see destination for tourists on a Mysore tour, captivates everyone. It is roughly 12 kilometres northwest of the city of Mysore. With its lit fountains, botanical park, wide variety of flora, and satisfying boating, Brindavan Gardens is a place for everyone.
Sir Mirza Ismail, the diwan of Mysore state at the time, constructed the Brindavan Gardens, which are particularly well-known for their symmetrical design and illuminated terrace gardens. He was the creative force behind its conceptualisation and modelling. This garden, which spans more than 60 acres, is designed on three levels and terminates in a horseshoe shape.
Brindavan Gardens is mostly a terrace garden that was constructed within the KRS Dam complex. When the Horticulture Department began construction on these gardens in 1927, the project got underway. The work is supposed to have been finished in 1932.
Mysore state’s then-diwan, Sir Mirza Ismail, had the notion to make the area surrounding the Krishnaraja Sagar Dam (KRS Dam), which is situated in the Srirangapatna taluk of the Mandya district, more aesthetically pleasing. The Cauvery River is one of the most important rivers in South India, and this dam was constructed across it in honour of Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV. Shalimar Gardens in Kashmir, which were constructed in the old Mughal style, served as the model for Brindavan Gardens. With its many fountains, terraces, water channels, parterres, lawns, flowerbeds, etc., it likewise exudes grandeur and beauty.
The Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporation, the Public Works Department, the Irrigation Department, and the Police Department are currently responsible for maintaining the dam site.
With their stunning beauty, numerous fountains, and enticing lighting, these terrace gardens are sure to captivate every guest. The main gate area, South Brindavan, North Brindavan, and the Children’s Garden are the different sections that make up Brindavan Gardens.
The India Gate in New Delhi served as the model for the main gate area, which features a very impressive building. There are rose gardens on either side of the entrance gate. The rose garden’s beauty combined with the main gate’s spectacular grandeur creates the ideal entryway to the garden. The hedgerows, flowerbeds, and lawns have all been beautifully kept.
The South Brindavan is the region next to the Cauvery Statue. The Kaveramma circle, which has stunning, enormous water fountains, is the area in front of this statue. From here, one can even notice terrace gardens in a variety of styles. The terrace garden’s grass features flower beds and patterned hedges, while Cypress plants can be found in the middle. Bougainvillaea and allamanda plants can be found on the terraces’ slopes. The terrace garden also has a number of fountains and dwarf plants, some of which are lit at night. Additionally, there is a glass house in South Brindavan with a variety of decorative plants that are used in the garden and can be purchased. Just beside the South Brindavan, there is Children’s Park, which is located towards its right. The park is an apt place for kids to play and enjoy, with its slides, concrete animals, birds, etc. and various other items.
The four expansive terrace gardens that make up North Brindavan are the most visually appealing part of the gardens. Each terrace garden provides a stunning view of the verdant grass, blooming flower beds, beautiful trees, and hedges. The numerous fountains that are lighted with vibrant lights are what further enhance the beauty of these gardens. Additionally, there is a decorative plant nursery.
The boat cruises make a visit to Brindavan Gardens even more delightful. The Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporation provides boating facilities because of the River Cauvery that separates North and South Brindavan. A vacation to Mysore will undoubtedly be unforgettable if you can boat on the calm river while taking in the captivating splendour of the Brindavan gardens.
The melodic fountains in the Brindavan Gardens are another well-liked feature. The water pressure from the dam powers the fountains, which are controlled by a controller. The musical fountain display features a coordinated water dance with music and vibrant lighting. A gallery and rain shelter have been constructed for guests. This performance took place at the North Brindavan.
