Gandamadana Parvatham / Lord Rama Footprint / Rama Theertham in Rameshwaram (History & Timings)

Another destination in Rameshwaram is Gandamadana Parvatham. This shrine, also called Rama Theertham, bears the footprints of Lord Rama on a chakra during his visit to find Goddess Sita after she was kidnapped by the demon Ravana. Thousands of devotees visit this hilltop temple, which is 3 km from Sri Ramanathaswamy Temple, in order to ask the Lord for blessings. Nearly all pilgrims who go on a Rameshwaram tour also stop by this temple.

There are further shrines in the area, including Sukreevar Teertham and Satchi Hanuman Temple. Additionally, Danushkodi Temple, another well-known shrine, lies nearby. This temple, which is devoted to Lord Rama, is situated atop the Gandamadana Parvatham hills. The footsteps of Lord Rama are preserved on a Chaka inside the temple.

Rama Theertham, popularly called as Lord Rama’s footprint, has various tales linked to it. Legend has it that Lord Rama met the demon Ravana’s brother, Vibhishana, here. In order to stop the demon’s evils, Vibhishana has aided Lord Rama in his battle against Ravana. There is also a picture of Vibhishana in the temple.

Another tale states that it is the first location where Lord Rama has rested during his protracted search for Goddess Sita following her captivity by the demon Ravana. It is thought that Lord waited here for a long time, gazing out across the wide ocean between where he stood and Lanka, where the Goddess was imprisoned.

Its great religious significance is complemented by its stunning natural beauty, which draws tourists here. Known as the highest point in Rameshwaram, the vista of the sea and the entire island is breathtaking from the summit. Here, the sunrise and sunset views are particularly mesmerising. Many people come here in the morning and evening to take in the stunning scenery and the glistening sun.
