Shalimar Bagh is the largest of Srinagar’s three Mughal gardens (the others are Nishat Bagh and Chashme Shahi), and it is wonderfully set out. The Mughal emperor Jahangir created this exquisite sight in 1619 for his adored wife Nur Jahan, and it overlooks the sparkling waters of Dal Lake. It is currently a public park, dubbed the “crown of Srinagar”.
The chini khanas, or arched nooks created behind waterfalls, and the chinar trees are the main attractions here. The title ‘Shalimar’ is a Sanskrit word that means ‘Abode of Love’ and goes by various other names, including Faiz Baksh and Farah Baksh. Shalimar Garden, with its well-kept grounds and fine architecture, is a lovely blend of natural attraction and man-made structures. The Mughal garden, which displays the Mughals’ excellent craftsmanship in gardening, is a famous destination for travelers from all over the world.
