The greatest Tibetan temple outside of Tibet, Namgyal Monastery in Mcleodganj, is thought to be the residence of the Dalai Lama, the spiritual head of Tibet. Even people who are not inclined toward this religion are drawn to this spot by the tranquility and atmosphere it instills in their heads. The Namgyal Monastery is frequently called “Dalai Lama’s Temple” because the 14th Dalai Lama resides there.

The second Dalai Lama established Namgyal Monastery in the 16th century so that monks might assist the Dalai Lama in matters of religion. In addition to serving as a center for study and meditation on the Buddhist philosophical exposition, the monks who live in this monastery perform practices for the benefit of Tibet. Known by another name, Namgyal Tantric College, it is presently home to 200 monks who strive to preserve the monastery’s customs, abilities, and practices. Buddhism is studied through the study of Tibetan and English, Sutra and Tantra texts, Buddhist philosophy, sand mandalas, ritual chanting, and dances.

History of Namgyal Monastery

Gyalwa Sonam Gyatso, the third Dalai Lama, established the monastery in 1564. In 1571, the monastery was renamed Namgyal in honor of the female divinity Namgyalma. The Namgyal monastery was relocated to Mcleod Ganj following the Tibetan uprising in 1959, and it remains there to this day. Today, the monastery is home to roughly 200 monks who represent the four primary basic Tibetan lineages. In 1992, Namgyal established a branch in New York, which included the Namgyal Monastery Institute of Buddhist Studies, on the current Dalai Lama’s recommendation.
