Lakshmana Tirtham in Rameshwaram (History & Timings)
One of India’s holiest pilgrimages is to Rameshwaram. There are several sites to see at Rameshwaram, which is home to numerous historic temples and holy theerthams. One of the sacred theerthams here is Lakshmana Theertham. There are about 64 sacred theerthas in Rameshwaram and the surrounding area, 22 of which are housed within the Sri Ramanathaswamy temple complex.
Rameshwaram Temple is only 1 km from Lakshmana Theertham, and there are numerous other well-known shrines close by. Panchmukhi Hanuman Temple, Sita Theertham, and Rama Theertham are all nearby.
By the side of the shrine devoted to Lord Lakshmana stands Lakshmana Theertham. This temple features a beautiful building with carved pillars that show statues of deities and scenes from the Ramayana. It was constructed in the Dravidian architectural style. Idols of Lord Rama, Lord Lakshmana, and Goddess Sita have been carved in the temple. Additionally, there are statues of Lord Lakshmana made of marble. The temple’s interior carvings depict Lord Lakshmana’s deep love to Lord Rama and Goddess Sita.
Lakshmana Theertham is accessible by the mandapam, which is situated by the temple side. With water on all sides, the pond features a mandapam in the middle. There are stairs leading from Mandapam to the sacred water spring. Legend has it that here, Lord Lakshmana erected a lingam and paid homage to Lord Shiva. Here he had worshipped Lord Shiva for the forgiveness of his sins. Lord Lakshmana is said to have bathed in this pond prior to reciting his prayers.
The fact that the Lakshmana Theertham hosts a floating automobile procession during the Thaipusam festival is another alluring aspect of this temple.
To atone for their sins, all pilgrims travelling to Rameshwaram come and bathe in the sacred waters of this theetha. It is thought that believers can atone for their previous transgressions by taking a bath in the sacred waters of Theerthams.
How to reach at Lakshmana Theertham, Rameshwaram
Lakshmana Theertham is in a convenient position and is easily reachable. The distance from the Rameshwaram bus stop is only 1 km. The distance to Agni Theertham from another well-known shrine is just 1.5 kilometres. To get to the Theertham, visitors can either take an autorickshaw or a government-run bus, which runs often.
