History of Botanical Garden Puducherry
In 1826, the Botanical Garden was created to investigate how different plants fared in Pondicherry’s environment. Approximately 800-900 plant species were cultivated here in 1829. Later, in 1838, renowned botanist S.G. Perottet created a live herbarium by adding numerous rare and new species. Over time, other botanists also brought in a number of new plants.
The Botanical Garden was maintained by the Department of Agriculture upon Puducherry’s admission as a Union Territory in 1954.
