Vattakottai Fort is a seaside fort that was constructed during the Travancore kingdom’s rule in the 18th century. It is without a doubt one of the most visited tourist destinations in Kanyakumari. Built as a coastal defense fort, this was the final seaside fort constructed by the Travancore kingdom. This fort was constructed during the reign of King Marthanda Varma of Travancore (1729–1758) under the command of Captain Eustachius De Lannoy.

History of the Vattakottai Fort 

During the Travancore Dynasty’s rule in the 18th century, this coastal fort was constructed. This is actually the Travancore Kingdom’s final fort. Under the direction of Captain Eustachius De Lannoy, construction on this fort began in 1729, during the reign of King Marthanda Varma. At the Battle of Colachel, the Travancore army overran and defeated Captain Eustachius De Lannoy’s force. As part of his defense fortification efforts for the Travancore Dynasty, Captain Eustachius De Lannoy eventually gained the King’s trust and esteem to the extent that he was tasked with erecting the Vattakottai Fort.  The Vattakottai Fort is declared to be a protected site under the Indian Archaeological department, and the administration makes timely renovations to ensure that the site is preserved as well as qualified to accommodate tourists.

Architecture of Vattakottai Fort

This fort is rectangular in shape, in contrast to its name, Vattakottai fort, which meaning circle fort. This fort, which is rectangular in design, occupies around 3.5 acres of ground. The impressive walls that enclose the fort are 25–26 feet high. The fort’s walls are around 29 feet thick at the front, 18 feet thick on the sides, and 6 feet thick at the back.

There are guard towers, weapon rooms, and numerous other areas to explore and take in the stunning architecture of Vattakottai Fort. Blocks of granite were used in its construction. Fish designs are etched into the fort’s walls. Pandya Kingdom made great use of the fish theme. As per various archaeologists, this fort must have been under the rule of Pandyas for some time.

It is also said that in the past, Padmanabhapuram Palace was visible from the summit of Vattakottai Fort. Additionally, there was a covert route via a tunnel that was about 4 feet wide and connected Padmanabhapuram Palace with Vattakottai Fort. The path was finally closed, though.

The Fort has a little pond in the middle, which makes it the perfect place to sit and take in the view of the ocean. The greatest spot to see the surrounding landscape and the sea is from the fort’s elevated parade ground.

Reaching Vattakottai Fort, Kanyakumari

Kanyakumari is about 7 miles from Vattakottai Fort. The Agasteeswaram Taluk is where it is situated. Travelers can easily get to the fort by renting a taxi to Kanyakumari. There are numerous buses that run from Kanyakumari to Vattakottai for people who prefer to travel by bus.
