We advise visiting the Ram Raja Temple while in Orchha. According to some, it is the only temple in India where Lord Ram is revered as King Rama; in all other temples, Rama is revered as Lord Rama. It is distinct in and of itself because of this trait. So, to put it another way, Orchha is a kingdom of Rama. When we first arrive at this temple during our tour of Orchha, it seems like the palace of a member of the royal family and lacks any structural features that would identify it as a temple.
The reason for this is that it was once the palace of Ganeshkuwari, the Bundela queen and the wife of King Madhukar Shah. Originally intended for Lord Rama, the Chaturbhuj temple was left unfinished when the statue of Rama arrived in Orchha, thus it was temporarily housed in this palace. Later, it was discovered that moving the statue of Lord Rama was nearly impossible due to its temporary, deeply fixed position. As a result, the ruler chose not to move the statue and turned the palace into a temple, creating distinct prayer spaces at the Chaturbhuj temple.
According to mythology, Queen Ganesh Kunwari was a follower of Lord Rama, while Madhukar Shah Ju Dev, the King of Orchha, was a devotee of Lord Krishna. At one point, the Queen refused to go to Braj-Mathura with the King because she preferred to go to Ayodhya. Determined, the King invited her to accompany him. The Queen declined. The king was irritated by this and told the queen to only go back to Orchha with Lord Rama. When the Queen arrived in Ayodhya, she began to pray to Lord Rama, but he did not show up.
At midnight, she finally gave up and dove into the Saryu River. Lord Rama appeared in the Queen’s lap in child form, pleased by her devotion and prayers. On three terms, Lord Rama consented to leave: “I will only travel during Pukh Nakshatra in order to arrive in Orchha with sages.” Second, I will be the King of Orchha when we get there. Thirdly, the seat you give me will be the last one I occupy.
The King began constructing the temple as soon as he learnt that the queen and Lord Rama had returned to Orchha. The queen, exhausted from her lengthy travel, sat with Lord Rama in her castle and made the decision to spend the night in her room. However, he took the first seat in accordance with Lord Rama’s requirements. The queen’s palace is hence still referred to as Ram Raja Temple.
The only temple in the nation where Lord Rama is revered as the King rather than a god is Rama Raja Temple, also called Orchha Temple. The building is painted in shades of pink, yellow and white. It is included as one of Orchha’s best structures in the Imperial Gazetteer. In addition to the architecture, the temple’s traditional values are also highly unique. During the evening aarti, the guards salute the god with their guns. Following the aarti, Lord Ram is brought to a temple, where he is returned to Ayodhya by Lord Hanuman. It is said that when notable guests visit, they are greeted with paan (betel nut) and ittar (perfume), in contrast to the usual distribution of sweet prasad in other temples.
Every year during Kartik month, the Ram Vivah Festival of Orchha is held at Shri Ram Raja Mandir. Thousands of devotees from throughout the nation attend this esteemed event. The celebration, which was established to honour the marriage of Lord Ram and the goddess Sita, is distinguished by the outstanding performances of trained horses. During Diwali, the temple is beautifully and picturesquely decorated with lights and diyas.
The temple has a courtyard at the entrance where numerous merchants and shopkeepers sell handcrafted goods like jewellery, toys, and religious objects. You can take part in thrilling activities like river rafting while in Orchha during Ram Vivah, as well as heritage walks and village visits.

The months of September through April are the ideal times to visit Ram Raja Temple. We can observe the monsoon season here from July to September, which is thought to be the worst time to visit because, as we all know, this location is on the Betwa River, which frequently floods during the monsoon, cutting off the route from main stream connectivity. Winter, which lasts from December to February, is a pleasant season.
The ideal way for travellers who live in remote areas, such as outside the state of Madhya Pradesh, to travel to Orchha for a tour is by rail. Orchha has a small railway station of its own, where a few trains stop. The best alternative is the Jhansi railway station, which has stops for all major trains and is well connected to all of India’s major cities and popular tourist destinations, including Delhi, Agra, Mumbai, Gwalior, Bhopal, Nagpur, Hyderabad, Haridwar, and so on.
