Nageshwarnath Temple, Ayodhya – History, Darshan, Pooja Timings

The Nageshwarnath Temple was built in Ayodhya next to the Theri Bazaar in honour of the local god, Lord Nageshwarnath. It is thought to have been established by Lord Rama’s son, Kush or Kusha.

Safar Jung’s minister, Naval Rai, is credited with rebuilding the present temple in 1750, despite the fact that this hallowed location has been well-maintained since 750 AD. According to legend, after Kush lost his arm ring in the local bath, he met Naga Kanya, a Shiva devotee.

When he discovered that the latter had developed feelings for him, he built this Shaiva shrine in honour of Naga Kanya. In Southern India, the Nageshwarnath Temple receives large numbers of devotees during Mahashivaratri and Trayodashi, also called Pradosh Vrat or Pradosh Vratam. The Lord Shiva procession, known as the Shiva Barat, is a major draw here.
